David Bridie
A group of us went to see David Bridie last night. It's been, um, years since I went to see live music in a pub and this was a great way to break the drought. (Thank you to Rachel, who also happens to be his manager)
This is a description of his music style:
David Bridie presents a bunch of new songs off his third album SUCCUMB with a strident new (rocking) five piece band to deliver them. This is Bridie with a big sound of edgy guitar, whirling analogue keyboards, anthemic vocals and layerings of drums and pacific percussion beats, alongside his trademark textures and lyrics of wry social and landscape observation.
It was great to see real evidence of creativity, personalised and real, as apposed to the songs in the charts, that could have been written by anyone, and sung by anyone. Sure they tap into some kind of universal unconscious that we all can relate too, but this felt very personal from the words down to the choice of keyboard effects.
Of course, I am nearly deaf in one ear after I stood next to a guy who made the most amazing but ear-piercingly loud whistle that sounded like some kind of drunk and high tweetie bird.
Now that's a skill I'd like to have.
